Chittagong (formerly known as Jalalabad) is the main seaport and its second-largest city in Bangladesh. The city lies in the south-east part of the country on the bank of the river Karnaphuli. Being situated between Chittagong Hill Tracts and the Bay of Bengal, Chittagong is considered as a very important commercial and trade city of Bangladesh.
Tourist Attractions in Chittagong:
Chittagong’s green hills and forests, its broad sandy beaches and its fine cool climate always attract the tourists. Chittagong has been mentioned in many documents as a seaport of mystical beauty and magnificent charm. Chinese traveler poet, Huen Tsang (7th century A.D.) described Chittagong as “A sleeping beauty emerging from mists and water” and the 16th century Portuguese seafarers titled Chittagong as “Porto Grande“.

Patenga Beach
Patenga Beach lies approximately twenty kilometers outside the city of Chittagong, and is located near to the Shah Amanat International Airport and the BNS Isha Khan Naval Base. It is located at the Karnaphuli River mouth and stretches to the Bay of Bengal. One can enjoy the arrival of mega sized foreign ships sitting beside the mouth of Karnafuli River in the Airport Road. The beach width is narrow and is quite sandy, with a few rocky patches here and there. Part of the seashore is built-up with concrete walls and large blocks of stones have been laid out in the beach to prevent erosion. Most visitors come to Patenga Beach to enjoy stunning sunsets and sunrises. Swimming in the sea in Patenga is not recommended.
After the sun-down, drug and peddlers start to approach visitors. But in recent times lighting of the beach area has enhanced the security aspect of visiting in the evening.
Foy’s Lake
Foy’s Lake is a man-made lake in the Chittagong city. The lake was once just a lake and spillway constructed by an Assam-Bengal Railway engineer. It was dug in 1924 and was named after the English engineer Mr. Foy. The lake is next to Batali Hill (the highest hill in Chittagong Metropolitan area). An amusement park, managed by the Concord group has been made there which features usual theme park rides and boat rides on the lake, landscaping, restaurants, concerts with floating stages, scenic walking trails and other fun activities. The park includes a water theme park, resort and an amusement center. The Chittagong Zoo is next door to Foy’s Lake.
World War II Cemetery
The War Cemetery is located in Badshah Mia Road and is a place of historic interest. It contains the graves of 755 soldiers of the Allied Forces who sacrificed their lives on the Indo-Burmese front during World War II. Most of the soldiers buried there were from Australia, Britain, Canada, East and West Africa, British India and New Zealand. The total area of the cemetery is eight acres. The World War II Cemetry is protected and maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
