North South University, Bangladesh

North South University is the first private university in Bangladesh and so far it is the most popular among all the private universities. The university was established in 1992 at Kamel Ataturk Avenue, Banani. It was there until they moved into their  permanent campus in Basundhara.

The university offers several Undergraduate and Master’s programs through four major schools including: School of Business, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, School of Life Sciences, and School of Arts and Social Sciences. The courses are on Business Administration, Computer Science and Engineering, Life Science, Architecture, Environmental Science, Economics, English, Pharmacy, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, and recently added Electrical and Electronic Engineering etc.

The old campus at Banani had six buildings all together including Star Tower, Sher Tower, GMQ, BTA Tower, Lifo Tower and the Department of Architecture building. The Star Tower had the Department of Computer Science and Pharmacy and it was the administrative building as well. The Sher Tower was for Department of Business and the rest were distributed among different departments. The Lifo Tower was the library building. The new campus is larger and includes all of those Departments. In addition to all of those, it has a wide canteen, gallery, auditorium, extended reading space below the library, hall, two floor parking space and wide open campus for it students. This campus has the ability to hold about 12000 students.

North South University was established with three courses: Computer Science, Business Administration and Economics – with 137 students. By law, the President of Bangladesh is the Chancellor of the university. The university administration is run by Vice Chancellor, Pro Vice Chancellor, Registrar and the founders.

The undergraduate program of Business Administration in the North South University is known as one of the best BBA programs in the country and the students of this department are highly demanded in the job market. The architect department is also very popular and has some of the best faculties in the country. North South University is one of the first universities that introduced Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering in Bangladesh. The research institutes of the university includes Institute of Development, Environment and Strategic Studies institute, English Institute, Center for Information and Communication Technology, and Confucius Institute. The  North South University is the first university in Bangladesh that introduced fully automatic system for library management. The software was self-designed.

There are several clubs run by the students. The University has the following clubs: Pharma Society, AIESEC, Young Economists’ Forum, Computer Club, Photography Club, Cine and Drama Club, Debate Club, MBA Club, Earth Club, Games and Sports Club, Media Club, Shangskritik Shangathan, Social Service Club, Young Entrepreneurs Society, Wireless Forum, English Club, and NSU Canvas.
